LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKE

I'm writing this blog mainly because we searched for one hour to find the starting point of this trail. We took a taxi in the city, we thought he understood us, but ended up at the wrong place. Then we took another one, and the same thing happened again. We even showed the driver the location on Google Maps, but that didn't make any difference.

Therefore, if you want to take a cap, the best way to get there is by showing the Chinese address: 龍脊遠足徑 (= Dragon Ridge hiking trail) Address: 香港島石澳石澳道土地灣. This is the name of the area near the trailhead where hikers begin their journey along the Dragon's Back ridge. If this doesn't work, watch the road and your phone's map, and tell him where to stop when he's driving too far. The beginning point of the trail looks like this:

There are toilets available at the beginning of the trail. A single cap drive from Central HK to this point will cost around 140 HKD / € 16,50.

THE ADDRESS

The address of the starting point is a bus stop at To Tei Wan on Shek O Road, Shek O, Hong Kong Island. The beginning point is usually the end of Shek O Road, near the To Tei Wan village. This is where the trailhead is located, and from this point, hikers begin their journey along the Dragon's Back ridge. The trailhead is well-marked, and there are signposts to guide you in the right direction.

HOW TO GET THERE?

You can go by taxi or by public transportation. You can take the MTR to Shau Kei Wan Station and catch a bus to the Shek O Road stop to reach the trailhead. Specifically, take the MTR to Shau Kei Wan Station from your location in Hong Kong. The Island Line (blue line) connects to Shau Kei Wan. Exit the Station: Once you arrive at Shau Kei Wan Station, take Exit A3. This exit will lead you to Shau Kei Wan Bus Terminus. Take the Bus: From the Shau Kei Wan Bus Terminus, look for Bus No. 9 or Bus No. 9A. Both buses will take you to the To Tei Wan stop, which is the starting point of the Dragon's Back hike. Bus No. 9A might be a more direct option.

Remember that public transportation schedules might change, so checking the current bus schedules and routes before your trip is a good idea.

DURATION

The Dragon's Back hike is around 8.5 kilometers long and can typically be completed in about 2 to 3 hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the views.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time is during the cooler and more comfortable months, generally between October and April. Autumn (October to November) is considered one of the best times to hike Dragon's Back. The weather is cooler and less humid, making it a pleasant experience. The foliage might also start to change colors, adding to the beauty of the landscape.

Winter (December to February) is also a great time to hike, as the temperatures are mild and the humidity is lower. You'll enjoy comfortable weather for outdoor activities, and the clear skies offer excellent visibility for the stunning vistas along the trail.

Spring (March to June) is another favorable season for the hike. The weather remains pleasant; you might even catch some blooming flowers and vibrant greenery along the trail.

We walked this trail during Summer (July - September) on a Sunday when the weather was above 30 degrees and the humidity was very high. It's doable, but make sure to bring enough water. At this time, there aren't too many people walking this trail because of the heat. Additionally, weekends and holidays tend to be busier on famous trails like Dragon's Back, so if you prefer a quieter experience, consider hiking on weekdays.
